In a powerful demonstration of its commitment to environmental justice and community-led restoration in the Niger Delta, the Miideekor Environmental Development Initiative -MEDI served as the lead coordinating organisation for a high-level visit to key Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) sites in Ogoniland.
The visit, led by the Founding Executive Director of the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy, & Development (Centre LSD), brought together critical stakeholders to witness firsthand the ongoing remediation efforts, assess progress, and evaluate the tangible impacts of HYPREP’s work on the ground. As the primary local partner, MEDI took full ownership of the logistics, arranging seamless access to multiple project sites, facilitating interactions between Centre LSD representatives and HYPREP teams, and acting as the key liaison to ensure the visit was efficient, respectful of community protocols, and highly productive.
MEDI’s leadership on the ground was instrumental in making the delegation’s mission a resounding success. The team coordinated site visits across various remediation locations, including areas focused on soil and groundwater cleanup, mangrove restoration, potable water provision, and livelihood restoration initiatives. Every detail—from transportation and security to community engagement and on-site briefings—was handled with precision, allowing the visitors to gain an unfiltered view of HYPREP’s achievements under the guidance of Project Coordinator Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey.
The visit highlighted several milestone projects, such as the construction of the Centre of Excellence for Environmental Restoration (CEER), ongoing potable water facilities supplying clean water to dozens of Ogoni communities, the Ogoni Specialist Hospital, and extensive mangrove restoration efforts that have reached advanced completion stages. MEDI’s deep-rooted presence in the region enabled authentic assessments of these interventions, with direct feedback from local communities underscoring the real improvements in environmental health, access to resources, and economic opportunities.
This initiative aligns perfectly with MEDI’s core mission to drive sustainable environmental development, amplify the voices of impacted communities, and hold stakeholders accountable for remediation promises. By leading the coordination and serving as the bridge between Centre LSD and HYPREP, MEDI reinforced its role as a trusted, proactive force in advancing the implementation of the landmark 2011 UNEP Report on Ogoniland.
The successful completion of the visit marks another victory for collaborative environmental advocacy in the Niger Delta. It not only showcased the progress being made in restoring polluted lands but also strengthened partnerships essential for long-term sustainability.
Miideekor Environmental Development Initiative remains at the forefront of these efforts, proudly owning and driving initiatives that transform environmental challenges into opportunities for healing and growth. As Ogoniland continues its journey toward full restoration, MEDI stands committed to leading such impactful collaborations, ensuring that community needs remain central to every step forward.
