The Miideekor Environmental Development Initiative -MEDI works with communities, civil society actors, and partners to confront environmental harm, defend community rights, and push for accountability in the Niger Delta and beyond.

Our work is shaped by decades of grassroots activism, community organising, and environmental justice struggles, particularly in Ogoniland and other oil-impacted areas. We focus on documenting harm, standing with affected communities, and engaging institutions at local, national, and international levels to demand remediation, justice, and sustainable alternatives.

Environmental Monitoring and Impact Assessment

We carry out field-based monitoring and assessment of oil pollution and environmental damage affecting communities. Through site visits, community engagement, and documentation, we gather evidence on the impact of oil spills, abandoned infrastructure, and pipeline failures on land, water, livelihoods, and public health.

Community Advocacy and Environmental Justice

At the heart of MEDI’s work is standing with communities affected by environmental harm. We support peaceful advocacy, public actions, and community-led demands for cleanup, compensation, and accountability.

Policy Engagement and Accountability

MEDI engages government institutions, regulatory bodies, and duty bearers to push for responsible environmental governance. Drawing from field evidence and community experiences, we contribute to discussions on oil pollution, remediation frameworks, and environmental policy implementation.

Through strategic engagement, MEDI challenges selective clean-up approaches and consistently calls for region-wide remediation across the Niger Delta, not just isolated interventions limited to a few communities.

Movement Building and Solidarity

MEDI works within broader environmental and human rights movements at national, regional, and international levels. We collaborate with civil society networks, grassroots groups, and global alliances to strengthen collective action against environmental injustice.

Memory, Resistance, and Public Education

MEDI recognises the power of memory and public engagement in sustaining environmental justice struggles. We organise public events, lectures, and memorial actions that connect past struggles to present realities.

Our Approach

Our  work is guided by clear principles:
  • Community first: We listen to and work with affected communities.
  • Evidence-based advocacy: Our positions are grounded in field realities.
  • Non-violent action: We uphold peaceful resistance and civic engagement.
  • Accountability: We insist that polluters and duty bearers take responsibility.
  • Solidarity: We believe environmental justice is collective and interconnected.
